Choosing the right roofing solution is important. However, today, you’ve never had more options to choose from when planning a roofing project. Advances in roofing and roofing materials have provided you with countless things to consider. One area in particular, an aspect that often gets overlooked in terms of importance, is shingle colours.

Your shingle colour has an impact on the look and performance of your roof. With the average shingle roof lasting about 20 years (give or take) choosing the shingle colour has a long term impact on your home. Here we’ve put together a shortlist of key considerations and tips to pick the right shingle colours for your roofing project:

Match And Compliment Your Home Design

Your home design, look, size, and the colour scheme used will all have an effect on the shingle colour you should select. Your roof makes up a large part of your home exterior. Ideally, you want to choose a shingle colour that will complement or even contrast your home design. Shingle colours can be used to contrast siding, brick, and other materials used to construct your home. You can choose a colour that pops or has a more traditional look.

Take A Walk

Not sure what shingle colour will best match your home design? Take a walk. What are other homeowners in your neighbourhood using? Walk around your neighbourhood and check out the colour other homes are using. The odds are there will be a similar home model in your area. Pay attention to the shingle colours they use and see if the colour matches your ideas.

Stand Out Or Blend In?

Today, there has never been more shingle colour options. Do you want to be that home that stands out, or do you want to blend in with other homes on your street? Your colour options are extensive and you can choose almost any colour you want. The colour you choose can make your roof look larger or smaller depending on your selection.

Choose A Top Shingle Manufacturer

While colour is an important consideration, it’s most important to choose a reliable shingle brand. Even if they may not have your exact colour preference, choosing a durable and reliable shingle that will give you the most value and protect your home is most important.

Not all roofing shingles are created equal. They are available in many different styles, types, and materials. Shingles are designed to provide your roof with protection against the elements – rain, snow, wind. They also act as a waterproofing barrier against water. The style and type of shingle you choose can have a big impact on your roof performance, cost, durability and reliability. They can also affect the look of your home.

Here we take a look at the types of roof shingles available to Canadian homeowners:

Types of Roof Shingles

There are many different types of roofing shingles you could choose for your home. The most popular include:

Asphalt shingles: The most popular type of shingle used today.

Slate shingles: Slate shingles are durable and ecofriendly. However, they can be heavy and expensive to install.

Tile shingles: They are known for durability, but add weight to your roof. The cost can be expensive. They can be created using many materials such as ceramic, metal, concrete, copper, composite, and polymer sand.

Wood shingles: Wood shingles and wood shakes have been around for centuries. They offer good insulation and can be used to enhance the home design.

While there are many types to choose from, you cannot beat the quality, ease of installation, durability and pricing of asphalt shingles. This is why they are used on the majority of homes across Canada today. They can withstand the weather and Canadian climate, protect your home and they are a cost-effective option.

Other shingle options can be cost-prohibitive, have limited options, are challenging to repair once installed and have other drawbacks.

3 Types of Asphalt Roofing Shingles

There are three main types of asphalt shingles to choose from:

3-Tab Shingles: These are your standard type of asphalt shingle that is installed on most roofs. They are rectangular, have countless colour options, are easy to install, and are often your cheapest asphalt single option.

Architectural Shingles: These shingles are a higher quality asphalt shingle. They are available in a wide variety of colours. They are known for being more durable, have a better design look, and are more equipped to deal with high winds and other incremental weather conditions. Architectural shingle designs can also mimic the style of slate, tile and wood.

Hip and Ridge Shingles: These are a specialized type of shingle that is used and formed over the hip or ridge of the roof. They can be used in conjunction with 3 tab and architectural shingles to and provide more protection against the weather and give your roof a more polished look.

Your roof is perhaps the most important element of your home. It provides you with shelter and protection and is an important structural element. The style, design, look, and materials used for residential roofs have gone through many transformations over the years.

Here we provide a summary outline of roof material development:

Clay Roofing Tiles

Clay roofing tiles date back thousands of years. There are some historical accounts that date back the use of clay roof tiles to 10,000 BC in China according to Roofing.com. Clay tiles were also widely used in Babylon, Greece and eventually across Europe. There was a large supply of clay and the material was regarded as fireproof. Over the years, with industrialization and mass production of clay, new types of tiles and designs were used.

Wood

Wood continues to play an important part in roof construction. It’s used as a base for shingles and to build the roof structure. Wood shingles were used on homes in the United States and Canada in the 1800s. They were used until the 1950s in Scandinavian regions.

Slate

Slate was used in the Northeastern United States and in Canada because of the availability of the materials. It was used in the late 1800s and quickly fell out of favour when asphalt shingles were introduced.

Asphalt Roof Shingle

The best known and most widely known type of roof today is the asphalt shingled roof for homes. While the exact origins are not entirely known, H.M. Reynolds Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan claims to have invested the Asphalt roof shingle, according to Architecture Magazine:

“Rolled asphalt roofing coated with slate granules was available by the late 19th century so it’s not a stretch to see how the material could have been used to make individual shingles soon thereafter—it also makes it even more difficult to nail down who, exactly, did it first. Asphalt shingles were widely available by 1910 and rapidly replaced wood shingles due to their economy and fire resistance. Throughout the 20th century, the asphalt shingle evolved to include a range of shapes and textures with the crushed slate coating replaced by ceramic granules.”

Built-Up Roofing

Built-up roofing surprisingly dates back to the 1890s. Architecture Magazine explains:

“The development of built-up roofing—comprising alternating layers of asphalt-impregnated fabric and bituminous coatings—changed the shape of buildings, quite literally, in the temperate regions of the U.S. The steep-slope roof was no longer necessary for rain protection, and the resulting flat roofs would forever change the scale and appearance of the built environment. The Barrett Manufacturing Co., in New York, was a major producer of built-up roofing materials, and the BTHL features the company’s technical catalogues from the 1890s through the 1950s.”

Metal Roofing

Metal roofs make from copper have played a huge role in historical architecture. They date back thousands of years. According to the National Park Service, US Department of the Interior, Tin roofs were used in Canada in the 18th century. It wasn’t until the 1850s that metal was widely used in the US after the ability to galvanize metal with zinc was invented to protect from rust. This was developed in France in 1837. Today steel roofs are making somewhat of a resurgence. However, they are considerably more expensive than shingles.

Residential roofs have evolved significantly over the year. Many materials, designs, and styles have been used. Innovations continue to happen to make your roof safer, more secure and durable.

Choosing the right roofing company for your next roof repair or replacement project is a key success factor. Choose the right company and get the work done on time and on budget. Choose the wrong company and you risk poor quality workmanship, delays, and issues with the project.

We all want to choose a great roofing company, but it can be challenging. No two companies are the same. Companies offer different services, different installation types, and have varying levels of experience.

While it’s tempting to choose a company based on price alone, this is short-sighted. Your roof plays an extremely important role for your home and you can’t risk anything but the best quality work.

If you are planning on re-shingling or replacing your roof, here are 5 tips to help you assess your options and choose the right roofing company:

A Strong Industry Presence

Company reputation and longevity within the roofing industry are very important signs a roofing company may be right for you. Make sure the roofing company you choose has a strong industry presence, is fully licensed and insured. Read reviews, testimonials and get an idea of the company’s overall reputation.

No Hassle, No Obligation Quote

All reputable roofing companies offer a free onsite estimate for roof repairs and replacements. They also don’t put any pressure on you to make a quick decision or ask for money on the spot. Top quality roofing companies understand that investing in your roof is a big decision. They are happy to go over your options with you and help you choose a service that best meets your needs.

A Clear And Well Defined Roof Repair and Replacement Process

Many people overlook the importance of their overall roof design and how it impacts the rest of their home and property. Your roof plays a big role in tying together the overall design of your home. It accounts for about one-third of your homes exterior. You want the roof colour, materials and texture to compliment your home style and look. If you don’t, it could look mismatched.
But, don’t worry, we have you covered. Here we will provide you with some great tips to help you choose the perfect roof design that completes your home:

Asphalt Shingles Are Cost Effective And Give You Design Options

There is a reason asphalt shingles are the most popular type of roof texture material. They are light, durable, come in a variety of options and are more cost effective than other texture options. While metal and other materials may be appealing, shingles are ideal for all types of homes, slopes, and roof styles.

Choose The Right Shingle – 3 Tab Shingles Vs Architectural

Three tab shingles are the standard shingles you see on most homes. They work with all homes designs. But if you are looking to do something a little different, consider architectural style shingles. These shingles will give your roof a different look – they will look more like wood or slate shakes. These will give your roof a more visual appeal. But they do cost a little more.

Avoid Too Much Texture

If you have a lot of textured materials in your home design already, choose a fairly plain shingle to complement it. Too much texture can negatively impact the overall look and curb appeal of your home.

Choose The Right Color For Your Area

Dark colors absorb the heat while lighter colors help to reflect it. More important than color is having proper ventilation on your roof. Choosing a lighter color will also make your home appear larger and help to visually highlight important architectural aspects of your homes design.

Choose A Complementary Shingle Color

Don’t try to match shingle color to your home, you want to complement it. Choose a color that will provide a great contrast to the current color scheme of your home. If you have a white home, almost any color will work. Brown/beige homes should have shingles that are grey, green, and blue. Red homes should have shingles that are brown, black, or grey.

We all know how harsh winter can be. Are you glad it’s finally over? Even though winter may be in the past, the damage it left could still be affecting your home today. Did your roof survive this winter untouched? The only way to know for sure is to take a look for the common signs of roofing damage.

Here are 5 excellent tips for checking your roof this spring:

1) Check Your Ceilings for Water Leaks

Water is the enemy. If you see water, there is undoubtedly a leak somewhere in your home. Always check your ceilings for a water leak. Make sure you check your ceilings on all levels of your home. In most cases, if there is a roof leak, you see water spots and moisture build up on the ceiling of your upper level. This is a sure-fire sign you have some roofing issues happening. It could be damaged shingles or flashing, or many other cases.

2) Inspect Your Attic for Wet Spots

If you don’t notice any signs of water leaks on your ceiling, it doesn’t mean they don’t exist. They may have just not made it down to your ceiling yet. Inspecting your roof from the inside through your attic will tell you a lot about the health of your roof. Check your roof on a sunny day. This way if there are holes, you’ll see the sun shine through. It’s also important to look for wet spots and signs of moisture.

3) Check All Sides of Your Home from Outside for Shingle Damage

Missing and damaged shingles are one of the most common roofing issues homeowners face in the spring. Ice, snow, water, and high winds can also compromise shingles. If shingles are damaged or missing, it creates a place for water to get into your roof and do damage to your home. Check your roof from all sides to ensure you are not missing any shingles.

4) Make Sure Your Gutters & Downspouts Are Working

Gutters and downspouts help move water off your roof and away from your home, that is if they are not obstructed. Check to make sure your gutters are free of debris and are properly moving water off the roof.

5) Get A Professional Roof Inspection

The best course of action is to get a professional roof inspection. Doing a self-check is a good starting point, but professionals have the right diagnostic tools, knowledge, and know what to look for. They know where common roof vulnerabilities are and how to identify the signs of roof issues. Getting a professional inspection will give you peace of mind in knowing for sure if you have a roof leak.

The sun is out and spring has finally arrived. The weather is warming up and homeowners are starting to plan their home improvement projects this year. While many may wait until summer or even fall, spring is the best of the year for home improvement, especially for roofing repair projects. What are you waiting for? Now is always the best time to fix lingering roofing issues!

The Best Time To Fix Your Roof Is Now!

Your roof is not a project that can be left for a rainy day (literally). If your roof has taken a beating this winter, you’ve noticed a leak or some missing shingles, then now is the time to take action. If you delay and delay and put a roofing repair project on the back burner, you risk getting burned. If you wait too long a simple repair could end up costing you more money and headache. Roofing issues tend to get worse over time. Dealing with them now allows you to put your roofing problems in the past.

Top 4 Reasons Spring is The Ideal Time For Roofing Repair Projects

If you are still thinking about doing some roof repairs this spring, we’ve put together some reasons to sway you to take action now. Here are the top 4 reasons spring is the best time to handle your roofing repair projects:

Identify issues caused over the winter

The cold temperatures, ice, snow and freezing wind can all cause damage to your roof, especially older roofs in need of replacement. Addressing your roofing issue in spring allows you to quickly fix the issues before they become a bigger problem. A minor leak that may have developed over the winter could turn into a huge issue once the spring and summer rain falls. Leaks only get worse.

It’s ideal weather for repairs

The temperature matters. The spring is the ideal time for using roofing materials. The installation of shingles and other roofing materials react best to weather conditions in spring – it’s not too hot or too cold. This allows your roof repairs to be more effective and efficient. The temperature will have less impact on the integrity of the roofing materials being used.

Time is on your side

While you may have identified a potential roof repair, you never know what you may find until a professional takes a look at your roof. The damage could be more extensive than you first anticipated. Addressing roofing issues in spring affords you more time and flexibility to deal with unforeseen issues. If your quick roof repair turns into a full replacement job, you will have the time to properly plan and prepare for it.

It’s easier to schedule roof repair

Spring tends to be a little quieter than the summer and fall months. You tend to have fewer plans and roofing companies have more flexibility in their schedules. During the spring there is more flexibility in scheduling. You can plan around your summer vacation and days off and have your choice of appointment options.

Give us a call and we may be able to fit you in for your repair quicker than you think. Plus, if you wait too long, you may have to end up waiting to get your roof repaired. Our schedule books up quickly so taking action in spring is best.

Get A FREE Estimate For Roofing Repairs

If you notice issues with your roof, now is always the best time to take action. Our experienced team can help you with all our roof repair needs – new shingles, leak repair and detection, and much more.

There are two ways to check to see if your roof is leaking – from the outside and from the inside. Most homeowners, if they check their roof at all, check it from the outside. They look at the shingles, gutters and eaves to identify roofing issues. But, when was the last time you checked your roof from the inside?

Some roof leaks are not obvious from outside. The signs exist within your home. Here we will provide you with some useful and effective tips to check from the inside if your roof is leaking.

In-Home Roof Leak Inspection

The truth is roof leaks can be difficult to find. The place you find water is not often the source of the actual leak. Most roofers will tell you that if you want to find the leak, you need to think like water.

Water typically penetrates your roof in the obvious places:

Where outside roof damage exists

Roofing seams and flashing

Vents

Skylights

Chimneys

Once water actually gets into your home it will flow along the rafters in your attic and along the ceiling until it finds a place to fall. You can expect it to flow downward. This means that the source of the leak can be across the other side of the house or within a few feet of the drip depending on your roofing structure.

The attic is the best place to start your inspection. Ideally you can perform your check during the day. Since its dark in the attic if you have a hole in your roof, you’ll be able to see sunlight shining through.

If a hole is not obvious, walk around your entire attic. Identify areas that have water penetration, water marks and stains. If the presence of water is not immediate, follow the smell of water and mustiness.

If you find an area where water is dripping, use this as your starting point and work your way up the roof. Follow the trail of water, moisture and dampness.

If you can’t find the leak, you best option is to cover you roof with plastic roof covering. Better yet, call a roofing professional to help you address your roof leak.

Roof leaks are common. They happen all the time to all types of homes. Naturally, you don’t want it to happen to yours – a major reason we suggest regular roof inspections.

While most roof leaks are obvious, they occur directly after a storm or are a result of wind damage, there are instances when roof leaks exist without homeowners even knowing it.

The truth is most roof leaks are undetected until it is too late – when you find evidence of water penetration inside of your home. At this point, the leak has existed for some time and damage could be extensive. It could have also spread to multiple areas of your home.

This is particularly the case with older roofs. They are more prone to roof leaks, especially those that are in need of a re-shingling or replacement. But roof leaks can also happen on new homes or recently replaced roofs if the workmanship is not up to par.

To help homeowners manage this stressful and undesirable situation, we have put together a list of 3 essential tips to help you survive a roof leak:

Be Proactive

Being proactive and dealing with the roof leak as soon as you identify it is vital. If left unattended, it will only cause more damage to your home and potentially create more issues. Roof leaks can lead to attic and ceiling damage, cause mold and mildew to grow and affect indoor air quality, pose a threat to electrical wiring, and it will also make your home less efficient.

Be ready to address a roof leak right away. Spend some time and research what to do when you find a leak and how to address it before you can get a professional to take a look.

Leave It To The Professionals

Speaking of professionals, its best to have a professional roofing company assess your roof leak before choosing a course of action. The issue could be minor and require small repairs or it could be extensive and require a roof replacement. Always get a professional opinion before taking action.

Be Financially Prepared

A roof leak could be an expensive repair job. Therefore, it’s important for homeowners to be prepared financially for roofing and all other types of home issues. Having an emergency home fund and know what type of roofing damage and leaks are and are not covered under your home insurance plan allows you to be financially prepared for these types of situations.
