4 Risks Your Roof Faces While Weathering Winter Storms

Winter storms are part of any Canadian winter. They also pose a threat to your home, and your roof in particular. If your roof is older, in need of replacing, or has vulnerable spots, a winter storm could pose even a greater risk to your home. Knowing the risks to your roof during the winter is important. This is why we’ve put together a list of the 4 common risks your roof faces during a winter storm:

Shingle Damage

The frigid temperatures can cause your shingles to harden, crack, and even break off. If ice or other flying objects hit your shingles on a cold day, there is a good chance they could be damaged, especially during a winter storm.

Leaks Causing Damage to Your 1st & 2nd Floor

Winter storms bring freezing rain, ice, snow, and moisture, all of which end up on your roof. If your roof is older, broken down, or has vulnerable spots, this water can get into your home and filter down to the second and even main level of your home. This can lead to a variety of issues including mold, structural issues, and more.

Weight Pressure from Snow Build Up

Snow and ice are heavy. Just think about how heavy snow can be when you’re shovelling your driveway. Now take all that snow and then some and add it to your roof. That is a lot of extra weight your roof has to hold. The pressure from snow build up could cause issues with your roofing structure.

Ice Dam

Ice can form on the edge of your roof and prevent melting snow from properly draining off your roof. When this happens, the water can leak into your home through improperly sealed sections of your roof. Ice dams can also lead to heat loss and add additional weight pressure to your roof. If possible, remove snow and ice from your roof to prevent ice dams from development.

We’re bound to experience a few winter storms each year. Some are big, some are small. But they can all pose a risk to your roof. Take preventative action by having your roof inspected regularly. Always check your roof after a big storm to ensure there is no damage or potential issues.
